Lube is the cheapest upgrade in sexual wellness, and also the most misunderstood. Many people in India still reach for coconut oil, body lotion or saliva, then wonder why sex or toy play feels uncomfortable. A proper personal lubricant reduces friction, makes everything smoother and helps prevent the small irritations that make intimacy less enjoyable. Here's how to choose the right one.
Why use lube at all?
- Natural lubrication varies from day to day with stress, hydration, medication, the menstrual cycle and age. Needing lube is completely normal.
- Toys don't produce any moisture of their own. Most male masturbators and all anal toys need lube to be comfortable.
- Less friction means less chance of chafing, condom breakage and next-day soreness.
- It simply feels better. Many couples say it makes foreplay and vibrators more enjoyable.
The four main types
Almost every lubricant sold in India falls into one of four groups. The base, meaning what the lube is made from, decides what it's safe to use with.
1. Water-based lube — the safe all-rounder
Water-based lube works with every toy material and every type of condom, washes off with plain water and won't stain bedsheets. The only downside is that it can dry out during long sessions, so add a little more or a few drops of water to revive it. If you're buying only one lube, buy this one. Browse water-based lubricants.
2. Silicone-based lube — long-lasting and slippery
Silicone lube lasts much longer than water-based lube, stays slippery in the shower and needs only a small amount. It is safe with latex condoms. The catch is that it can react with silicone toys and make their surface tacky or rough over time, so keep it for skin-to-skin sex and for glass or hard-plastic toys. It also takes soap to wash off, and it can make the bathroom floor slippery.
3. Oil-based lube — for massage, not condoms
Massage oils and oil-based lubes feel rich and work well for a full-body massage. But oil weakens latex condoms, which makes them more likely to tear, and it can damage soft TPE and jelly toys. That's why we don't recommend coconut oil or baby oil as a sex lubricant. Keep oils for massage, and use a water-based lube for sex and toys.
4. Flavoured and warming lubes
Flavoured lubes are usually water-based and made for oral play. Warming and cooling lubes add a tingling sensation. Both are fun extras, but they contain more ingredients, so patch-test them on your inner arm first and avoid internal use if you have sensitive skin.
Quick compatibility guide
- Latex condoms: water-based or silicone-based. Never oil.
- Silicone toys (most vibrators): water-based only.
- TPE or jelly toys (many masturbator sleeves): water-based only.
- Glass, metal and hard-plastic toys: any lube.
- In the shower: silicone-based lasts longest, but don't use it on silicone toys.
- Anal play: a thicker water-based gel, used generously.

If you have sensitive skin
- Choose fragrance-free formulas with a short ingredient list.
- If you're prone to irritation, look for glycerin-free and paraben-free lubes.
- Patch-test on your inner arm 24 hours before first use.
- Stop using any product that causes burning or itching. If the irritation doesn't settle, see a doctor or gynaecologist.
Vaginal dryness during breastfeeding, after menopause or while taking certain medicines is common. A good lube can make intimacy more comfortable, but it doesn't treat any underlying cause, so mention ongoing dryness or pain to your doctor.
How much to use
Start with a coin-sized amount on the toy or on yourself, not straight onto your partner, and warm it in your hand first. Add more as soon as things feel less smooth. With masturbator cups, put lube both at the opening and inside the sleeve. There's no prize for using less.
Storage and shelf life
Keep lube capped, out of direct sun and away from heat. A car glovebox in an Indian summer is a bad idea. Check the expiry date on the bottle, and throw it away if the colour, smell or texture changes. After a session, wash your toys as described in our cleaning and storage guide.
Buying lube discreetly in India
You don't need to ask for it at a chemist's counter. Livemacy ships lubricants in a plain box with no product name on the label, and you can pay in full online through PayU (UPI, cards, net banking or wallets) or choose partial COD: 50% online through PayU and the rest on delivery with OTP. Adding a lube to a toy order is also the easiest way to make sure your new toy feels good from the very first use. Shop lubricants, or pair one with sex toys for women or sex toys for men.
