Clean towel and gentle soap laid out for toy care

How to clean a male masturbator: sleeves, cups and strokers

A step-by-step guide to washing, drying and storing a masturbator sleeve, cup or automatic stroker so it stays hygienic and lasts longer.

A male masturbator is one of the easiest toys to use, but it's also the one people most often clean badly. Soft sleeve materials are porous and hold on to moisture, so a quick rinse isn't enough. Cleaning it properly takes about five minutes, keeps it hygienic and stops it from turning sticky or smelly. This guide covers manual sleeves, cups with a hard case, and automatic strokers with a motor.

What you'll need

  • Warm (not hot) water. Hot water can warp or weaken soft sleeve materials.
  • A mild, unscented soap or a dedicated toy cleaner. Avoid harsh detergents, alcohol, bleach and antibacterial hand washes, which can dry out and crack the sleeve.
  • A clean, lint-free towel, or a paper towel for the inside.
  • Optional: a little cornflour (renewing powder) for soft sleeves once they're dry.

Step 1: Clean it straight after use

The longer lube and fluids sit inside a sleeve, the harder they are to wash out. Make it a habit to rinse your toy as soon as you've finished, even if you do the full clean a few minutes later.

Step 2: Take it apart

If your masturbator has a hard case, as most masturbator cups do, remove the end cap and slide the inner sleeve out. Open-ended sleeves are the easiest to clean because water can run straight through. Some egg-style sleeves can be turned inside out, which makes washing the texture very simple.

Step 3: Wash the inside thoroughly

  • Run warm water through the sleeve, gently stretching the opening so water reaches the textured interior.
  • Add a small amount of mild soap or toy cleaner and work it through with your fingers, squeezing the sleeve so the soapy water moves through every ridge and nub.
  • Rinse until no soap is left. Any residue can irritate sensitive skin next time.
  • For closed-end sleeves, fill with water, squeeze and empty several times.

Step 4: Dry it completely

This is the step most people skip, and it's the most important. Moisture trapped inside a sleeve is what causes smells and mould. Pat the outside dry, then push a rolled-up paper towel gently inside to soak up water. Leave the sleeve standing upright or on a drying rack in a clean, airy place until it is completely dry inside, which usually takes a few hours. Never use a hair dryer on high heat, and don't leave it in direct sun.

Step 5: Refresh and store

Once it's fully dry, a light dusting of cornflour helps soft sleeves keep their silky feel instead of becoming tacky. Put the sleeve back in its case, or store it in a clean pouch or box away from other toys. Soft materials can react with other plastics if they touch for a long time.

Cleaning an automatic or vibrating masturbator

Vibrating masturbators and automatic strokers have a motor, so the body usually can't go under the tap. Always follow the instructions in the box. In general, you remove the inner sleeve and wash it exactly as above, then wipe the motor housing and buttons with a damp cloth and a little toy cleaner. Keep water away from the charging port, and make sure everything is completely dry before you refit the sleeve or put it on charge.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using silicone-based lube with a soft sleeve. It can break down the material. Stick to water-based lube. Our lubricants page explains the options.
  • Boiling or dishwashing a sleeve. Soft sleeves can melt or deform.
  • Putting the sleeve back in its case while it's still damp.
  • Sharing a sleeve without washing it in between, or at all. A masturbator is a personal item.

When to replace your masturbator

Even with good care, soft sleeves don't last forever. Replace yours if it develops tears, a smell that doesn't wash out, discolouration or a sticky surface that cornflour doesn't fix. If you're choosing a new one, our male masturbators page compares sleeves, cups and powered strokers, and how to use a male masturbator covers first-time use.
