Butt plugs are one of the most searched-for toys in India, and also one of the most misunderstood. People of any gender and any orientation use them, alone or with a partner. A plug is a short, tapered toy that's designed to stay in place, giving a feeling of fullness. This guide covers how to choose a first plug, how to prepare, how to use one comfortably, and how to clean it afterwards.
The one rule that matters most: a flared base
Only ever use a toy made for anal use, with a wide, flared base. The body's muscles can pull an object inward, and a toy without a base can slip fully inside and need a doctor to remove it. Never improvise with household objects. Every plug in our anal toys range has a flared base or a retrieval ring for this reason.
Choosing your first plug
- Size: start smaller than you think you need. A slim plug is much more comfortable for a first try, and you can always size up later.
- Shape: look for a gradual taper, a narrow neck (the part the muscles close around) and a base that's comfortable to sit on.
- Material: smooth, non-porous silicone is the easiest to keep clean. Our silicone vs TPE guide explains why.
- Trainer kits: a set of plugs in increasing sizes lets you build up gradually over weeks rather than in one session.
Lube is not optional
Unlike the vagina, the anus doesn't produce its own lubrication, so plenty of lube is essential. A thicker water-based lube works well and is safe with every toy material and with condoms. Silicone lube lasts longer but can damage silicone toys, so test it on a small area first or stick to water-based. Our guide to choosing lube covers the differences, and you can browse lubricants here. Reapply whenever things start to feel dry.
Getting ready
- Choose a time when you're relaxed and not in a hurry. Tension makes everything harder.
- Use the toilet and take a warm shower beforehand if it helps you feel comfortable.
- Trim and file your fingernails if you'll be using your fingers first.
- Wash the plug with warm water and mild soap or toy cleaner.
- Keep a towel and the lube within reach.
Using it, step by step
- Get into a comfortable position. Lying on your side with your knees drawn up is a good start.
- Spend a few minutes relaxing. Slow, deep breaths help the muscles loosen.
- Apply lube generously to the plug and to yourself.
- Press the tip gently against the opening and breathe out as you push slowly. Let the body open up; don't force it.
- If you feel sharp pain, stop. Mild pressure is normal, pain is not.
- Once the widest part passes, the plug settles at the neck and the base sits against the body.
- Start with a few minutes. To remove it, relax, breathe out and pull out slowly by the base.
Trying it with a partner
If a partner is involved, talk first, agree on a clear way to say stop, and let the person wearing the plug control the pace. Some couples pair a plug with a couple vibrator or another toy from our couple sex toys range once they're comfortable. For tips on bringing up a new toy, read partner play basics.
Safety notes
- Never move a toy from anal to vaginal use without washing it thoroughly first. A condom over the toy makes switching easier.
- Don't use numbing creams or sprays. Pain is your body's way of telling you to slow down.
- Don't sleep wearing a plug, and build up wearing time gradually.
- If you notice bleeding, ongoing pain, or can't remove a toy, see a doctor. Doctors deal with this routinely and without judgement.
Cleaning and storage
Wash the plug straight after use with warm water and mild unscented soap or a toy cleaner, paying attention to the neck and base. Let it air-dry fully, then store it in a clean pouch away from other toys. Our cleaning and storage guide has more detail.
