Prostate massage for beginners: a calm, safe guide for men

What prostate play is, how to choose a first prostate massager, how to prepare and go slowly, and the safety and cleaning rules every beginner in India should know.

Prostate massage is one of the most searched-for topics among men in India, and one of the least talked about. The prostate is a small gland that sits just below the bladder, a few centimetres inside the body, towards the front. Many men find gentle pressure on this area pleasurable, and curious men of every orientation explore it, alone or with a partner. This guide explains the basics in plain language: choosing a first toy, preparing, going slowly and cleaning up afterwards.

Pleasure, not a medical treatment

You may see websites claim that prostate massage treats or prevents prostate problems. We make no such claims. Prostate massage for pleasure is a personal choice, nothing more. If you have pain when passing urine, blood in urine or semen, trouble urinating, or any other prostate concern, see a doctor or urologist. Don't try to treat it yourself at home.

Choosing your first prostate massager

  • Shape: prostate massagers have a gentle curve that angles towards the front of the body. Beginners should start with a slim, smooth toy rather than a large one.
  • A flared base or handle: this is essential. Any toy used anally must have a wide base so it can't slip fully inside. Never use household objects.
  • Material: smooth, non-porous silicone is the easiest to keep clean. Our silicone vs TPE guide explains the difference.
  • Vibration: optional. Some men prefer a simple, non-vibrating toy at first, then try vibration later.
  • If you're unsure, a small butt plug is a gentler way to get used to the feeling before trying a curved massager.

You'll find prostate massagers and beginner plugs in our anal toys range, and more ideas in sex toys for men.

Plenty of lube, every time

The anus doesn't make its own lubrication, so lube is essential for comfort and safety. A thicker water-based lube is the safest choice with any toy material and with condoms. Silicone lube lasts longer but can damage silicone toys. Our guide to choosing lube covers the options, and you can browse lubricants here. Reapply as soon as anything feels dry.

Getting ready

  • Pick a private time when you're relaxed and won't be disturbed.
  • Use the toilet and take a warm shower beforehand if that helps you feel comfortable.
  • Trim and file your nails if you'll use a finger first.
  • Wash the toy with warm water and mild soap or toy cleaner, and keep a towel and lube within reach.

Step by step

  • Lie on your side with your knees drawn up, or on your back with a pillow under your hips.
  • Breathe slowly for a few minutes. Relaxed muscles make everything easier.
  • Apply lube generously to the toy and to yourself.
  • Insert the tip slowly while breathing out, with the curve pointing towards the front of your body (towards your belly button).
  • Go only as far as feels comfortable. Mild pressure is normal; sharp pain means stop.
  • Once it's in place, try small, slow rocking movements or gentle pressure rather than moving it in and out quickly.
  • Start with short sessions. To remove the toy, relax, breathe out and draw it out slowly by the base.

Don't worry if the first try feels like 'nothing much'. Many men need a few relaxed sessions to get used to the sensation. There's no goal to reach and no right way to feel.

How to massage the prostate: finger or toy?

Both work, so choose whichever feels less daunting. A finger lets you feel what's happening and control the pressure exactly, but it can be hard to reach on your own. A curved toy reaches more easily and leaves your hands free, but you have less feedback, so go more slowly. Whichever you use, the steps above stay the same: short nails, plenty of lube, slow breathing and gentle pressure towards the belly button rather than deep, quick movement.

If you're using a finger, a clean disposable glove keeps things smooth and makes clean-up easy. Keep the pressure light and steady, as firm pressing can leave the area sore. If you've built up some experience, a hands-free toy such as the Uranus thrusting massager is an option, but start with a smaller butt plug first.

How to massage a guy's prostate

  • Ask first, and only go ahead if he's clearly keen. Agree that either of you can stop at any time.
  • Trim and smooth your nails, wear a clean glove and use a good amount of lube.
  • Let him lie back and relax for a few minutes before you try anything.
  • Go slowly and keep checking in. Ask what feels good and what doesn't, and let him set the pace.
  • Use light, steady pressure, and stop straight away if he feels pain.

How long should it take, and how often?

There's no set time or schedule. Start with about 10 to 15 minutes and stop sooner if you feel sore. If the area is still tender the next day, wait until it feels normal before trying again. Our water-based lube guide in Hindi explains why plenty of lube matters here.

Exploring with a partner

If a partner is involved, talk beforehand, agree on a clear stop word, and let the person receiving set the pace. Some couples add a toy from our couple sex toys range once they're comfortable. For tips on raising a new idea gently, read partner play basics.

Safety notes

  • Only use toys with a flared base or handle.
  • Don't use numbing creams or sprays. Pain is a signal to slow down or stop.
  • Never move a toy from anal to vaginal use without washing it thoroughly first.
  • If you notice bleeding, ongoing pain, or a toy can't be removed, see a doctor promptly. Doctors handle this without judgement.

Cleaning and storage

Wash the toy straight after use with warm water and mild unscented soap or toy cleaner, paying attention to the curve and the base. Let it air-dry fully and store it in a clean pouch, away from other toys. Our cleaning and storage guide has more detail.
